The Association of Child Abuse Lawyers
The Association of Child Abuse Lawyers is a company limited by guarantee set up for the benefit of lawyers, experts and other professionals involved in the field of obtaining compensation for the physical, sexual or emotional abuse of children and adults abused in childhood, as well as persons with a mental health condition and others directly or indirectly affected by that abuse.
The Challenge:
By 2023, ACAL could see their website was starting to fall behind. It wasn’t just that it looked old — the real issue was that it couldn’t keep up with a membership base that was growing and changing fast. They weren’t just after a prettier design; they needed a solid, secure system that could handle all the complicated membership tasks without anyone having to step in.
Before the rebuild, most of the management work was done manually. Different professionals needed different levels of access to things like resources, events, and databases, which made everything harder to keep organized. It created extra work for the team and left plenty of room for small mistakes to slip through.
The tricky part was updating ACAL’s website while also setting up a membership system that could basically run itself. Now, registrations, renewals, and payments all happen without anyone having to intervene. It’s made life a lot easier for the admin team, and the whole process just flows more smoothly.
The results:
This website was a pretty tough build because we had to make a fully custom membership system from scratch. People can sign up at different levels depending on their jobs, which then decides what they get access to — stuff like certain databases, events, publications, and the online community. With Stripe hooked up, yearly payments and renewals just happen automatically, so nobody has to go in and do it manually. It also takes a lot of pressure off ACAL’s staff by checking who’s paid and switching profiles between public and private as needed.
We built it using PHP and the Stripe API so that everything worked exactly the way ACAL needed, no compromises.
